Essential Oil Since essential oils are very concentrated and potent, they should never be applied in its pure undiluted form to the skin, but should be suitably diluted. There are different dilution levels that should be used, depending on how they are being used. Bath - You would
normally add about 7 drops of essential oils to a bath mixed with a tablespoon
of milk so it mixes with your bath and doesn't just lie on the surface of the
water, if you have a sensitive
Burner - Heat the water in your burner and add 3/4 drops of essential oil, then extinguish the candle and let the oil infuse around your room. You can leave the candle burning but this will use the essential oil alot quicker. Massage oil - You can create some very therapeutic blends for massage and ideally these should be made freshly for maximum benefit. With aprox 25ml of carrier oil use 6-9 drops of essential oil depending on smell and skin sensitivity. Always patch test and avoid precautions - Pregnancy, skin sores, sickness etc. Essential oils
Basil - promotes alertness, concentration, focus and a positive
attitude. Gives you a
feeling
of
renewed strength and vitality. Helps to stimulate the nervous system, aids
in
digestion, balances
emotions, is an anti-depressant, helps stop migraines, repels insects and
helps with insomnia. Do not use while pregnant.
Bergamot - anxiety, depression, colds, fever, flu, used in Earl Grey Tea. Citronella- insect repellent - moths, ants, fleas and outside pests, air freshener. Eucalyptus - asthma, bronchitis, coughs, sinus problems - chest problems. Fir Needle - Good for bronchitis, coughs, sinusitis. Wonderful clean scent in bathrooms, kitchens and closets. Frankincense - stress, meditation, anxiety, nervous tension, asthma, bronchitis, colds, flu. Grapefruit - antiseptic, water retention, depression, nervous exhaustion, energy. Jasmine - energy, helps build up immune system, used during child birthing for energy, perks up chemotherapy patients. ![]() Lavender - headaches, nausea, anxiety, tension, depression, insomnia, motion sickness, hypertension, vertigo, PMS. Lemon - refreshing, decongestant, asthma, coughs, insect repellent, helps focus the mind while studying or working, helps with memory and retention of information. Marjoram - helps with any sinus condition, head colds, sinus headaches, nervous tension. Orange - Spreads sunshine on gloomy anxiety, tension, sedative, great for children who have trouble settling down and/or sleeping. Patchouli - nervous exhaustion, antidepressant, aphrodisiac, helps to tighten loose skin after excessive dieting. Curbs appetite. Diuretic cool inflamed conditions - acne, eczema, fungal infections and scalp disorders. Peppermint - helps overcome fatigue, nausea, stress headaches, migraines, colds, vertigo, fainting, shock, apathy, lethargy. Completely eliminates the smell of tobacco. Rose - Soothing affect on emotions, eases nervous tension, Positive feminine oil, calms PMT, regulates monthly cycle. Good for whole circulation, reliving cardiac congestion & toning the capillaries. good treatment for fry skin and broken thread veins. Aphrodisiac, antidepressant, antispasmodic. Avoid in Pregnancy.
Rosemary - Aids memory, strengths the mind, migraine headaches,
asthma, coughs, eases rheumatic pains & tired overworks muscles. Do not use
if you have high blood pressure, are pregnant or suffer from epilepsy.
Sandalwood - Very relaxing oil, sooths nervous tension & anxiety.
Sedative, aphrodisiac, diuretic. Eases Cystitis. Sore throats, dry & aged
skin.
Spearmint - stimulates tiered mind, headaches, nausea, will take
away house smells - tobacco, kitty litter, fish! Very strong oil so best not
used on skin unless in minute dilutions. Do not use in pregnancy only
labour.
Ti-Tree - Helps the immune systems fight off infectious disease.
Massage with Ti-Tree before an operation help fortify the body. All useful
post operation. Very Cleansing - useful for spots, boil & carbuncles,
athletes foot. Fungicide, insecticide, stimulant, antiseptic, antiviral. May
irritate sensitive skin.
Vetivert - Calming oil, useful before stressful situations as it
settles the nerves, Tonic, Antiseptic.
Ylang Ylang- sensual oil, takes away anger and frustration, helps lower blood pressure, excellent for calming, soothing and insomnia. Always use Essential oils with a base product - cream, oil or water (bath) and not directly on to the skin. Except for Lavender which can be used for burns or rubbed onto the temples for help with Headaches.
Following the guidelines below will help keep the use of essential oils safe for you and those around you: Never take essential oils internally unless so advised by your medical practitioner. Keep essential oils out of the reach of children. Always dilute essential oils with a suitable carrier oil before applying it to the skin. If you are pregnant, lactating or suffer from epilepsy, hypertension (high blood pressure), have cancer or liver damage, or any other medical condition, only use essential oils under guidance of a qualified aroma practitioner/aroma therapist. Use essential oils with great care on children.
Take care not to get any essential oils into your eyes or on to any mucus membranes. Some oils are not indicated for use while you are pregnant, due to the stimulating effect it has on the urinary system and uterus. Using such oils during the early months of pregnancy can cause contractions and premature delivery. When nursing babies care must be taken with your selection of essential oils to prevent skin transference to the baby. When using essential oils is would be better to abstain from using alcohol, or if inevitable, a small glass of white wine at mealtime can be consumed. Check for any interaction between medication and essential oils, since some essential oils can interfere with certain prescription medication. When using essential oils that cause sun sensitivity people should take care to avoid expose to the sun. People with a sensitive skin should always perform a skin patch test before using untried essential oils.
